Wind swept through a permitted burn of slash piles Oct. 29 on property owned by Pope Resources off State Route 104 and burned as much as 80 acres of harvested timberland.
Julie Knobel, assistant region manager for wildfire enforcement for the state Department of Natural Resources (DNR), said Monday that the burn was close to 100 percent contained. No one was injured, and there were no highway closures because of the burn, she said.
“This wind event was a sustained east wind, a dry wind, and it was very extraordinary,” Knobel said.
Knobel said it has not been determined if there were any violations of the permit.
Pope Resources called for DNR assistance to help contain the fire. Knobel said Pope would receive a bill for DNR services, but she did not know how much that would be.
In addition to the DNR and Pope Resources fighting the blaze, firefighters were summoned from Clallam County Fire District 2, Clallam County Fire District 3 and the Quilcene Fire Rescue.
Knobel said the slash burn between Center Road and Peterson Lake had been started with a permit last week and that the winds started to whip up on Saturday, Oct. 28, then grew stronger on Sunday, Oct. 29.
