He joined the Army as a member of the 82nd Airborne as a paratrooper for two years. On the GI bill, he attended and graduated from the UW school of Forestry and worked for the US forest Service as a fire spotter and smoke jumper. He graduated from the Forestry school at the UW and began a career serving the plywood and lumber mills of the Olympic Peninsula with Reichhold Chemicals. He moved to Browns Point in Tacoma and raised his family there. His territory for work made him many friends at the mills and almost every weekend he would travel to the peninsula to go fishing with the many friends he made through his work. He was a longtime Husky fan and held season tickets to football games even after relocating to Port Townsend.

Upon his retirement, Spencer and Joanne relocated to Cape George Colony at Port Townsend in 1993, where he lived until his death. The love of his life, Joanne died suddenly on January 25, 1998. He remained in Cape George and served the community as a handyman and ace gopher catcher. He had many friends at Cape George and the First Presbyterian Church of Port Townsend, which he regularly attended since 1993.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey Floyd (Sandy) of Auburn and daughters, Lisa Baker of Port Townsend and Sandra Floyd of Tacoma, brother Wallace Henry Floyd of New Zealand, 7 grandchildren, four great grandchildren, nephew Nate Anderson and niece Robin McHattie and her family.
