Officers with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to 228 calls for service between Jan. 9 and Jan. 16, 2017. Among the incidents were 911 hang-up calls, animal complaints, a death investigation, a domestic violence incident, a property dispute, a prowler report and a commercial fire incident.

The incidents below are not all encompassing and represent a portion of incidents to which JCSO responded.

On Jan. 9, a deputy responded to the Chimacum Middle School, where it was reported that a student was in possession of marijuana. The deputy spoke with the student, who identified the person who had sold her the marijuana. Deputies investigated the incident and gathered information that culminated in a search warrant for a residence near the 6000 block of State Route 20 in Port Townsend. Deputies served the search warrant the following day. In doing so, they obtained probable cause to arrest a man on suspicion of distribution of marijuana to persons younger than 18. The man was booked into Jefferson County Jail.

At 11:47 a.m. on Jan. 11, an employee for the Quinault Indian Nation reported leaving a black 2008 Honda NPS50 scooter chained to a tree. When the employee returned shortly thereafter, the vehicle was gone. The scooter was entered into a national database as stolen.

A Nordland resident reported a possible fraud on Jan. 12. The resident told law enforcement that she had applied to an advertisement on the Internet to be a secret shopper, and had received two checks totaling $2,450. The resident said she deposited the checks and found out they were fraudulent. The bank charged her $36 for the transaction. Deputies note that the scheme typically requires that the person deposit the checks, purchase gift cards or wire money from a store, and send the cards or money to a particular address with a report on how courteous the store employee was. The victim sends the money prior to the check clearing the bank, resulting in a monetary loss. More information can be found at ic3.gov.

Jeffcom 911 received a text at 8:17 p.m., Jan. 14 from someone who indicated that his vehicle had gotten stuck on Forest Service Road 27 in Quilcene, and that he and his party were more than 10 miles from his car. The person reported that they were not equipped for an overnight stay and were requesting help. A deputy was able to coordinate assistance with a citizen who successfully recovered the subjects.
