Rudolph John Sandor, 93, of New Canaan, CT, passed away peacefully on October
3, 2023. He was born in Stamford on March 30, 1930, to the late Joseph and Sophie Sandor, emigrants from Czechoslovakia. He graduated from Stamford High School and attended J. M. Wright Technical School. He served in the Army on the front lines during the Korean War.
He spent his career as a designer and builder and his design style can be found in numerous buildings across Connecticut. He participated in the original plans for the famous Stew Leonard’s in Norwalk, CT, the Landmark Tower in Stamford, and later designed the popular New Canaan Restaurant “Fat Tuesdays” on Elm Street.
Upon retirement, Rudy and Mary Anne moved to his beloved Port Ludlow, Washington, to a home overlooking Puget Sound, where they lived for over 25 years before moving back to New Canaan.
Rudy grew up with a passion for skating, boating, and water sports on Long Island Sound with his brothers. He enjoyed many athletic accomplishments, including winning the “Silver Skates” speed skating competition in Boston, MA, and in 1950, and being a finalist in the 1951 Speed Skating Olympic trials in St. Paul. He passed on his love for skiing, skating, waterskiing, sailing, fishing, and golf to all his children. He is survived by Mary Ann, his wife of 67 years, daughter Andrea Sandor, sons Douglas Sandor and wife Julia, Gregory Sandor and wife Belinda, Donald Sandor, and wife Deda, and 11 grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on October 7, 2023, at St. Benedicts
Church, 1 St. Benedict Circle, Stamford, Connecticut at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow with Military Honors at St. John Cemetery, 25 Camp Ave, Darien, Connecticut.
