The East Jefferson Rivals track and field teams, on the last Saturday of their Spring Break, traveled to the Birger Solberg Invitational at Civic Stadium in Bellingham.

A total of 52 high school teams were represented at the meet, and in combined scores, the Rivals finished as the top 1A division team and in 20th place overall.

The distance squads set off the day with a pair of school records in a couple of rarely-run events. Sebastian Manza was the first EJ competitor of the day, participating in the 2000-meter steeplechase for his first time. Manza was able to excel in a crowded field of 32 athletes to take fourth place and the Port Townsend High School record with a time of 6:53.39.

Shortly thereafter, the girls 4x800-meter relay team of Lia Poore, Melody Douglas, Fiona Fraser, and Camryn Hines also netted a fourth-place finish in 11:05.15, smashing the old school record by more than 40 seconds.

The highest individual placer for East Jefferson was Tusker Behrenfeld with his second-place toss in the javelin at 161 5.

Sophomore Reid Martin also competed in the javelin event and placed 21st out of 34 with a throw of 115 5.

Senior shot putters Anson Jones and Gage Barry placed 12th and 21st respectively in a field of 39 with marks of 40 3.25 and 36 10.75.

In the girls event, Douglas put the shot 25 7.75 to place 20th.

In the discus, seniors Behrenfeld and Barry placed 11th (113 8) and 18th (105 06).

Poore led the jumps crew with a massive 2-foot personal best in the triple jump to place fifth with a mark of 32 9.

Junior Conner Patterson flashed his own breakthrough to place 15th in the boys triple jump at 34 4. Isaac Reid competed in the long jump, placing 33rd with a leap of 14 6.75.

Hines came back after the relay to place fifth in the 800-meter run with a personal best time of 2:27.36.

Sophomore teammate Aliyah Yearian came back to action after sitting out with knee discomfort last week and improved her personal best in the 1600-meter race to 5:28.42 for a seventh place finish.

Senior Ava Vaughan-Mifsud came back from a disappointing discus competition, in which she fouled out, to record a personal best in the 400-meter run at 1:18.02.

Fraser completed the girls track endeavors in the 3200-meter with a 19th place finish in 13:07.30.

On the boys side, senior 1600-meter runner Glen Dawson placed 35th out of 51 athletes with a personal record of 4:56.65.

Senior sprinter Reid competed in the 100-meter dash and finished with a time of 12.79 seconds.

Manza came back after the steeplechase to race in the 3200-meter run along with freshman teammate Soare Johnston. In a field of 37 athletes, Manza placed 11th (10:10.67) and Johnston 29th with a new personal best time of 10:29.20.

The boys 4x800-meter relay team of Ben Martin, Tristen Herbig, Indigo Gould, and Johnston finished 25th with a time of 10:49.60.

The EJ track and field teams were scheduled to compete at Klahowya Secondary School Tuesday, April 12, and again on Saturday, April 16 for the Li’l Norway Invitational at North Kitsap High.
