Teal Lake Road was closed from 12:26 p.m., Feb. 8 until 12:55 a.m., Feb. 10 to allow an estimated 2,500 gallons of propane to vent from an overturned truck owned by Jefferson Propane.

The driver of the truck escaped injury, but the road was closed after efforts to pump out the propane were unsuccessful.

East Jefferson Fire Rescue public information officer Bill Beezley said the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was leading the investigation into the cause of the accident.

A spokesperson for the sheriff’s office could not be reached for comment as of The Leader’s deadline to see how that investigation was going.

A crack in a pipe exiting the tank caused a propane leak, according to a press release from East Jefferson Fire Rescue. Due to the location of the crack adjacent to the tank, hazardous material firefighters were unable to cap it, officials said.

After conferring with propane experts and the state Department of Ecology, a decision was made to monitor the situation until the propane had completely vented and the vehicle could be righted.

Firefighters set up perimeters 300 yards away on the north side of Teal Lake Road and a half mile away on the south. The road was closed to the public from U.S. Highway 104 to Andy Cooper Road. Due to the remote location, it wasn’t necessary to evacuate any homeowners, officials said.

Units from East Jefferson Fire Rescue, Port Ludlow Fire & Rescue, Quilcene Fire Rescue, Naval Magazine Indian Island and Poulsbo Fire Department responded to the accident.
