Sue Estes died suddenly on Tuesday, March 14, 2017.

Sue was born in Beaumont, Texas on Feb. 11, 1944 and grew up in Sour Lake, Texas. She graduated from Lamar University in 1968 with a Bachelor of Arts in History. That's also where she met and married her husband John Estes in July 1964. She worked at the Texas Department of Human Services with her gal pals. She later retired as a Hearing Officer after 29.5 years.

Sue and John were very active in the Humane Society of Jefferson County, Texas and the Spindle top Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. They loved to travel together.

After retirement, they moved to Port Townsend, Wash. in Dec. 1998. Sue worked for the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program as Regional Coordinator for Clallam and Jefferson Counties from 1999 until 2008. Sue volunteered for the Northwest Arts and also for Eccho in Port Townsend.

Sue was an active member of the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Port Townsend. Sue was an avid reader. Her favorite thing to do was to sit in front of the fireplace listening to classical music while reading her current favorite book. As a true Bookie, she belonged to the "Bookies Book Club." Sue journaled "Bookies today did me a world of good." She enjoyed her club members and always looked forward to each meeting. Sue was a supporter of many Humane groups including the Humane Society of Jefferson County in Port Townsend.

Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Glatice and Veston Harrison, her brothers, Jimmy and Kenneth Harrison and her niece, Rhonda Harrison. She is survived by her husband, John Estes of Port Townsend and three nephews, Pat, Kenneth and Steve Harrison of Texas and her sister-in-law, Virginia Harrison of Texas. She is also survived by her two dogs and two cats.

Sue loved her family and treasured her friends. She was a free spirit, a trusted advocate and a devoted wife. When Sue walked into a room, she brought warmth, friendship, a listening ear and a calming presence.

There will be a Celebration of her Life on April 2, 2017 at 2:30 p.m. at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Port Townsend. Sue would ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Humane Society of Jefferson County at 112 Critter Lane, Port Townsend, Wash. 98368.
