Elizabeth Anne Johnston Brown

Elizabeth Anne (Johnston) Brown died in Port Townsend, Wash., on Apr. 22, 2017, just four days after her 94th birthday. She was the second child and only daughter of Roy and Clara (Varney) Johnston, born in Bremerton, Wash., on Apr. 18, 1923.
She graduated from West Seattle High School in 1941, graduated with a B.S. in Bacteriology from the University of Washington in 1945 and in 1947 completed an M.S. at the University of Michigan, where she was also on staff as an assistant bacteriologist.
She joined the Microbiology Department at the University of Washington until she took the opportunity to teach for two years at the Americann University of Beruit in Lebanon in 1954. Narrowly avoiding the Suez Crisis in 1956, she returned to Seattle, travelling east, completing her first trip around the world, and resumed her career at King County Public Health.
Elizabeth was an avid outdoorswoman, and she climbed Mt. Rainier, Mt. St. Helens and many other Northwest peaks with the Mountaineers. She married a fellow Mountaineer, Clifford Brown, in 1962, and together they hiked and climbed all around the Pacific Northwest. They also traveled together throughout the country and the world, completing another months-long trip around the world in 1977.
Elizabeth was preceded in death by her husband Cliff and all five of her brothers, David (Betsy), Robert (Joan), Arthur (Geri), William (Pat) and Jim (Kay). She leaves behind nine nieces and four nephews, lots of greats and grands, and many good friends, all who loved Elizabeth and her boundless love and knowledge of the world around her.
