Edna Jane Nelson

Port Townsend, Wash.

Jan. 7, 1941 – Dec. 19, 2016

Edna Jane Nelson, 75, passed away peacefully at home on the afternoon of December 19, 2016 surrounded by her family. She suffered lung disease for many years. She had the pleasure of having care from her children and grandchildren, as well as her friend and caregiver Linda May whose care allowed her to fulfill her wish to stay at home.

Edna J. Perkins was born Jan. 7, 1941 to the late Horace and Iva Perkins in Oregon, one of four children including her brothers, Jack and Charles, and her sister Joann Perkins Mikeska who preceded her in death.

She was married to Emil Nelson for 22 years and later spent 18 years with James Ramey as his loving partner. Edna loved to read, play cards and to cook and bake. She enjoyed being social with family and friends, playing scratch lottery tickets, spending a day at the casino and playing on her tablet. She loved crafting, crocheting blankets, and making doll lamps. She sewed for her girls and later her grandkids. She was fun to be around and had a great sense of humor.

She took pride in how she cared for others. Edna always put family first and instilled in all of us that same value. She was generous to anyone in need and often did more for people than she let others know. If you were hungry, she fed you; if you were short on money, she filled the gap.

She is survived by her daughters Debbie Baker, Janie Nelson-Achodor and Violet Nelson; grandchildren Heather Germeau, Andrew (Tosha) Nelson, and Payton (Shianne) O'Meara; great-grandchildren Aurora Germeau, Jordan Lang, Savannah Nelson and Andre Nelson; as well as James Ramey's wonderful children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Edna was the best mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, as well as sister and friend. She spent her life helping others in whatever way she could. She worked at Fort Worden when it was a youth center and she loved that job. She helped Emil with his construction business as well as successfully ran the San Juan Grocery for many years. Eventually she worked at the Penny Saver Market where she was known for her kindness and smiles to everyone.

We cannot tell you how many times people have said to us, “Your mom is so great, she made everyone feel welcome and loved.” She had a kind word, an encouraging word and often a wise word for most everyone she met.

She will live on in all of us. Please join us Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 from Noon-2 p.m. for a memorial celebration of this wonderful woman at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St. in Port Townsend. If you have questions or need more info, please call Janie at (360) 301-0529.
