Bruce Fiegler was a man who would give you his last nickel. He lived his 64 years in the service of others. At his passing, Bruce was a resident of Port Townsend, Wash., where he will be missed by his many friends there as well as in Anchorage and throughout the U.S.
Born and raised in New Orleans, Bruce was the middle child of the late Esther and Edward Fiegler. Bruce earned a basketball scholarship at De LaSalle High School where he graduated, and later attended Louisiana State University for two years. Additionally, he acquired numerous trade certificates over the years.
Bruce arrived in Anchorage in April 1982 and six days into his Alaskan adventure, he met Molly, his best friend and wife of 34 years. Bruce, a true animal lover, met Molly through her golden retriever, Barney. Bruce’s calm and gentle nature was his most precious gift to everyone around him. Whether they be four-legged or two-legged, everyone was comforted by his presence.
He spent 25 years of his life, working for the State of Alaska, helping the neediest in his community sort out their welfare benefits. At his retirement in 2013, his service was recognized by Alaska Governor Sean Parnell. Never one to sit back, while working for the State of Alaska, he also worked evenings for United Airlines, retiring from UAL after 15 years of service.
He is survived by his wife Marlene “Molly” McCoy and his five siblings; Edward A. Fiegler Jr. (Clarice), Jerome Fiegler (Maricel), Mary Beth Lloyd (James), James Fiegler (Mary) and Jane Fiegler, as well as a niece and nephew.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Harborview Burn Center. Bruce was an organ donor and as such provided the most precious gift of all to children with unspeakable injuries. Molly held a private Celebration of Life gathering for close friends and family at their home in Port Townsend on Dec. 15, 2016. A Celebration of Life will take place in New Orleans in Spring 2017 and in Anchorage this coming summer.
