Betty June “Mur” Green

Buellton, Calif.

Aug. 5, 1923 – Jan. 12, 2017

Born in Pasadena, Calif., June grew up in Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez, Calif. where she graduated from Santa Ynez Valley Union High School in 1941. An avid horsewoman, she trained horses and showed jumpers in the Santa Barbara area. Mur later trained and raced Thoroughbreds from her father’s Sedgegrass Farm, worked at Santa Anita Racetrack and raised her two children, Kerry and Dennis, in Arcadia, Calif.

In 1993, Mur moved to Port Townsend, Wash. to live with her daughter’s family. Mur was secretary of the Port Townsend Little League, and attended all her grandsons’ baseball, basketball, football and soccer games. Mur was a favorite grandmother to all, particularly those children she loved and helped raise in the Bell Street neighborhood. Mur also enjoyed a good party as well as monthly Bunko games with her many friends in Port Townsend.

In 2014, Mur returned to the Santa Ynez Valley where she enjoyed visits from old friends and family. She loved watching the horses and cattle in the green pastures from her front window, always with her Havanese, Champy, by her side.

Mur is survived by her children, Kerry Robinson and Dennis Helliwell (and Marianne in Cypress, Texas); her four grandsons Brendan Helliwell, Jared (Whitney), Ian (Dénise), and Cameron Robinson; and great-grandson, Samuel Robinson.

At her request, Mur’s family will gather to spread her ashes in places she loved. Please send any remembrances in her honor to a Port Townsend sports organization: Little League, Basketball Club, Youth Football, Soccer Club or Port Townsend Boosters, or to your local Visiting Nurse and Hospice team.
