Joanne passed away at home surrounded by her family after a long struggle with cancer at the age of 79. She is survived by her husband Earl, son Brian and daughter-in-law Susy of West Richland and son Stanley and daughter-in-law Margaret of Bainbridge Island, Washington.

Soon after marrying Earl in 1958 she moved to be with him on Tatoosh Island where he worked for the National Weather Service. They spent their first four years of marriage on this storm swept outpost off of Cape Flattery on the Olympic Peninsula. Hundreds of people enjoyed the Tatoosh Island slide show presentation Joanne created years later about this unique experience. Many people also remember Joanne’s volunteer work giving cruise ship passenger tours of Port Townsend. She also liked to hike in the Olympic Mountains.

In addition to raising a family, Joanne worked as a substitute teacher, secretary and travel agent. In 1990 she completed her nursing degree and became a registered nurse. A resident of Marrowstone Island since 1993, many remember her outgoing personality working at her retirement job at the Nordland Store. Joanne was a whirlwind of activity, had an inspiring laugh, strong opinions and a remarkable gift for interior design and decoration. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held. The time has not yet been determined.
