Jared Brockway, beloved son, brother and husband, passed away peacefully on Aug. 11, 2023.

Born Feb. 2, 1971 to Ken and Karen Brockway, Jared grew up in Kelso, Wash. While attending Kelso High School, he began commercial fishing in Alaska with his father in the summers. He continued fishing while working his way through the University of Washington, graduating in 1993 with a degree in computer science. After living and working in Chicago and New York, he pursued advanced degrees at Carnegie Mellon University.

During this time, he got involved in triathlons with an especially keen interest in cycling. He completed several Iron Mans and participated in long-distance cycling events, including Paris-Brest-Paris.

In 2008 Jared began sailing, which turned into a life-long passion. Along with his wife Genevieve, Jared traveled the world, often at the helm of a boat. Jared loved teaching others about sailing.

He ran a multihull charter business with one of his best friends, taught at OCSC in Berkeley, Calif., volunteered with BAADS in San Francisco and Velabili in Switzerland, and crewed on many boats in both the northern and southern hemispheres.

Jared was preceded in death by his brother, Kelly. He is survived by his wife, Genevieve Peterson, his parents Karen and Ken Brockway, and his sister Rachel Brockway.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In Jared’s honor, consider a donation to support a local sailing organization or simply offer a shot of rum to the deep blue.
