Discovery Bay golfers play Captain’s Cup, Strike Three, Ones

The golfers of the Discovery Bay Women’s Club completed the first round of the Captain’s Cup Championship along with playing Strike Three.

For their weekly Thursday matchups, club members voted on the Captain’s Cup Championship rules, with the format being tallied by the scores of two 18-hole rounds. The gross winner of the event must play from the red tee box with the net winner driving from the tee box matching their handicap.

The ladies completed one of three rounds for the Captain’s Cup Championship Aug. 11 while also playing Strike Three at the same time. For Strike Three, the final scores are calculated by giving participants the ability to toss out the three worst holes of the 18-hole round as well as subtracting half of their handicap for the round.

Due to the changes in tallying final scores, the participants’ scores were unusually low when compared to typical scores.

Terry Graham came in first for Strike Three with a score of 59, and Barb Aldrich took second with 61. Third place was Jan Peoples with a score of 62 and Wanda Synnesvedt tallied a net score of 65 to come in fourth.

Additionally, one participant is awarded a small cash prize for the fewest number of puts in the 18-hole round.

With 31 putts in total to win the prize, golfer Cindy Westwood was queen of the greens on Thursday.

The ladies returned to the tees again Aug. 18 for a game of Ones on a hot and humid Thursday, with the golfers completing another round of the Captain’s Cup Championship.

For Ones, only the nine holes that start with “O,” “N,” “E,” or “S” are counted with handicaps for participants’ net scores.

The game ended in a three-way tie with Terry Graham, Dee Sweeney, and Wanda Synnestvedt all finishing with scores of 38.5. Cindy Breed won the putting contest.

This upcoming Thursday is the third and final round of the Captain’s Cup.

Then, the Championship Cup will open for the next three weeks.

The winner of the Captain’s Cup must compete in two 18-hole rounds with the player tallying the lowest score winning.
