Port Townsend’s girl grapplers did well at a 375-athlete event Jan. 9-10 in Kelso, which coach Stephen Grimm said was the largest high school tourney he’s ever seen.
Charity Jesionowski (125 pounds) placed fourth in her 32-competitor bracket while Ally Bradley (105) won multiple matches and Hanna Welch (140) and Chloe Rogers (145) each finished in the top eight.
“The girls made a name for themselves as contenders,” said coach Grimm, “knocking off multiple top 10 sate-ranked girls. And now that they know what they can do, we need to spend the next three weeks training for districts and hopefully a run at the state tournament.”
Jesionowski opened with a pin win over Mountain View, lost her second match in the double-elimination tourney to a Steilacoom wrestler, and went on to win five straight to be a top-six medalist: topping Yelm, Napavine and Pasco wrestlers by pin, winning 7-4 over Kalama and 10-2 over Sequim before finishing with a 5-0 loss to Centralia.
Bradley lost to 19-17 to a Franklin Pierce wrestler, had a bye, won by pin over Yelm, and was ousted with a pin loss to Warden.
Welch won 9-7 over Enumclaw, lost by pin to Sequim, won by pin over Warden, won by pin over Forks, won 15-4 over White River and lost 7-4 to Pasco.
Rogers had a bye, won by pin over Yelm, lost by pin to Forks, won by pin over Kelso, and lost 15-5 to Kalama.
