The Port Townsend girls' soccer team and Chimacum volleyball team look forward to district tourney play-in games, while the cross country runners are geared for the district finals. Here is the sports wrap as of Oct. 25:

VOLLEYBALL

CHIMACUM

The Cowboys (3-4 league, 6-8 overall) lost 3-1 on the road to 2A North Mason, and fell 3-0 Monday at Klahowya.

Coach James Shingleton noted the trip to play Klahowya in Silverdale was delayed an hour when high winds closed the Hood Canal Bridge, and things never got any better.

"A fire alarm set off during opening [Senior Night] announcements put us outside for 30 minutes, and then another 20 minutes of announcements for the seniors," Shingleton reported. "We were finally able to play our 6:15 game at 8. Needless to say we were flat from the opening serve. Despite our best efforts we just weren't able to execute serves and finish off our plays."

The coach noted that "senior setter Taylor Carthum gave it her all in running our 5-1 offense against the Eagles. Mechelle Nisbet led the team in kills. Defensively, Ericka Lindgren and Shanya Nisbet were standouts."

Chimacum has earned a playoff shot as the Olympic League No. 3 finishing, hosting the Nisqually League No. 4 team in a district play-in game on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The victor advances to play a loser-out game Nov. 3 at the Nisqually No. 2 team.

NEXT: Conclude regular season at Port Townsend, 6:15 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 27.

PORT TOWNSEND

The PT spikers (0-6, 2-10) dropped two home matches, falling 3-0 to Cascade Christian Oct. 18 and losing 3-0 to league-leading Coupeville Oct. 20.

NEXT: Host Chimacum 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 and end the season by hosting Coupeville 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

QUILCENE

The Quilcene High School volleyball team earned a league championship for the first time since the 1992 season, and are undefeated champs for first time since 1991.

The Lady Rangers (11-0 league, 14-0 overall) completed their SeaTac League title run with a 3-0 match win Oct. 20 against winless Northwest Yeshiva, and a 3-0 win Oct. 24 against fourth-place Mt. Rainier Lutheran.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

CHIMACUM

The Cowboys (1-6, 2-7-1) lost 7-1 to league champ Klahowya, and earned its first league victory Oct. 22, prevailing 4-2 at home over Port Townsend to end their season on a positive note.

PORT TOWNSEND

Last week, the Redhawks lost 9-0 to Cascade Christian, the Nisqually League leader, 5-2 to Coupeville and 4-2 at Chimacum. The regular season was to end Sept. 25 against Klahowya.

Port Townsend (2-6 league, 3-10-1 overall) earns a post-season play-in game Oct. 27 as Olympic League No. 3 against Nisqually League No. 4 team.

The winner advances to a loser-out game against the Nisqually No. 2 team (probably Charles Wright Academy), 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27 at Jefferson County Memorial Athletic Field.

That winner advances to meet the Olympic League champion (Klahowya) Nov. 1. The district title game is Nov. 5 at Silverdale Stadium.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Cedars at Dungeness Golf Course in Sequim hosted the Olympic League Championships on Oct. 20. Port Townsend High School coach Alice Fraser indicated the 5000-meter course was slippery and challenging due to wet conditions and times were generally slower than typical on that course. The junior varsity boys ran first and placed 4th out of eight teams. The only other 1A team in the competition was Klahowya, which finished second overall. The JV boys were led by freshmen Seamus Fraser (15th overall out of 105 runners, 19:30), Aaron Lee (20th, 19:51), and Silas DeWyse (25th, 20:17).

The varsity boys finished 5th out of nine teams, edging Klahowya by nine points. PT was led by senior Brennan LaBrie (9th out of 63, 17:34), sophomore Gabe Petrick (16th, 18:10), and freshman Nathan Cantrell (25th, 18:35).

“Cantrell was notably the fastest male freshman at the meet,” said Fraser.

The girls placed 5th out of eight teams despite missing a top runner. Klahowya was the leading 1A team, taking 2nd place overall. PT was led by freshman Anika Avelino (6th out of 81), junior Aliyah Parson (12th, 22:15) and senior Ari Winter (26th, 23:30). Avelino had the distinction of being the meet’s fastest freshman female.

The varsity teams next compete in the Westside Classic district championship meet Saturday, Oct. 29 at American Lake Veterans Golf Course in Tacoma. The top girls’ and boys’ team, and top seven individuals advance to the 1A state championships Nov. 5 at the Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco.
