The Port Townsend Paper Mill will be the focus of programs this winter that will share stories about the mill, from its history and economic and workforce impact, to its recycling practices, and the products the business produces.

The series is being presented by the Jefferson County Historical Society, the Port Townsend Public Library, the city of Port Townsend, the Port Townsend Paper Mill, KPTZ 91.9, the Swan School, and others.

Programs include a speaker series, family activities, and art displays.

Speaker Series

• “100 Years of History at the Port Townsend Paper Mill,” presented by Kevin Scott, general manager for the Port Townsend Paper Mill. It will be hosted via Zoom at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 28 (Zoom link is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83781533348).

• “History and Operation of the Port Townsend Olympic Gravity Water System,” presented by Ian Jablonski, Water Resources Operations Manager for the city of Port Townsend. It will be hosted via Zoom at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 25 (Zoom link is https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84410925745).

• “In Their Own Words: Mill Workers Past and Present,” is a one-hour radio broadcast on KPTZ featuring curated oral histories from the historical society’s collection. It is scheduled for the week of March 29; exact date and time of the broadcast is pending.

Family Activities

• Papermill Complete Paper Making Kit, at the Port Townsend Public Library. The program for kids 8 and up will detail how to recycle and make paper by turning household wastepaper into usable handmade sheets – in minutes. There will be illustrated directions and quality, reusable supplies; available for check-out from the Port Townsend Public Library through its Unusual Items program.

• Follow Your Nose Bingo Game by Sentosphere USA, also available for check-out from the library’s Unusual Items program. Play bingo with your nose with a game that includes 30 vials with scents identified on the bottom, including floral, herbal, and fruit scents.

• Paper Art Installations. The Jefferson Museum of Art & History and Port Townsend Public Library invite submissions for Port Townsend Paper, to be shown in two separate venues, April 1 to May 31. Dates for installation may change as both spaces opening are contingent on health guidelines associated with COVID-19. The exhibitions will engage with two artists or artist teams, one per venue, in paper-based installation work that explores connections between past and present, and relationships with the Pacific Northwest environment.

• Swan School Student Work. Art teacher Dana Weir will be working with students grades Pre-K –through sixth grade to create art pieces out of mill paper. Student work will be on display this spring in a downtown storefront.
