East Jefferson Fire Rescue provided mutual aid support last week when a fire stoked by strong winds destroyed a home in Dungeness Sunday afternoon.
Clallam County Fire District No. 3 firefighters were called to the 300 block of Thornton Drive after the homeowner heard a smoke detector in the basement, official said.
When the resident went to investigate, he found 6-foot-high flames reaching toward the ceiling. He got his family out of the residence and then called 911.
The district’s Engine 33 arrived 10 minutes later and found half of the two-story home engulfed in flames.
The flames, accelerated by high westerly winds, rapidly spread to the rest of the home.
Officials from Clallam County Fire District No. 3 said the residents got out of the house with minor injuries, from scrapes to singed hair.
No firefighter injuries were reported. All told, two dozen firefighters participated in the firefight, supported by four fire engines, four water tenders, a rehab unit, and an ambulance from Olympic Ambulance.
During the event, East Jefferson Fire Rescue staffed the Blyn fire station on the eastern end of Clallam County Fire District No. 3.
