I sadly read the notice in The Leader about the decision, brought about by financial constraints, to change to a digital platform at the visitor center.
It is particularly sad to me because due to the pandemic the visitor center closed its doors and the volunteers — many who had given of their time for many years, have now literally faded into history.
I wonder how many people realize what a gift the multitude of volunteers of the Port Townsend Visitor Information Center gave to this community over the years. I speak from experience as I was employed for a time, as the Volunteer Coordinator there. I was incredibly impressed by their knowledge of our community — its history, its businesses, the food, the wine and the local favorites. There were always stories being shared, personal connections being made; it just felt good to be in that space. And I know each one of them was a memorable ambassador for our community.
I really just wanted to say to any of those VIC volunteers still out there in our community, THANK YOU. You mattered and you made a difference. No digital platform will ever replace your human touch.
