Two Port Hadlock residents were killed when their Honda Civic sedan collided head-on with another car Friday afternoon on US Highway 101 just east of Diamond Point Road.
Shayla R. Umphenour, 33, and her passenger, a 7-year-old boy, died at the scene of the July 7 crash, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The driver of the other vehicle, a 66-year-old Sequim woman, was also injured in the wreck and taken to Jefferson Healthcare Medical Center in Port Townsend for treatment.
Authorities did not identify the child who died in the collision.
According to the State Patrol, the crash happened just after 4:30 p.m. Friday on US 101 at Milepost 278.
The State Patrol said Umphenour’s 2006 Honda Civic was heading south on the highway when it crossed the center line and hit a 2012 Buick Enclave SUV that was heading north.
Investigators said vehicles had slowed on the highway in front of Umphenour and it appeared she crossed into the other lane to avoid traffic that had slowed when she hit the Buick.
Both vehicles were totaled and were towed from the scene.
US 101 was shut down in both directions after the crash, and traffic on the highway was backed up for miles in each direction.
The highway reopened to traffic just after 8 p.m. Friday.
