We are deeply grieved and offended by your unwise decision to contract Jefferson County business to the Peninsula Daily Newsthe newspaper of Clallam County (Port Angeles and Sequim) as opposed to continuing to do business with our purely ‘Jefferson County’ long-time local newspaper.

We have nothing against the PDN or Clallam County, but as ‘seniors’, we remember well the old saying: “Charity begins at home.” And this isn’t even charity; it’s just good business.

We completely agree with Scott Wilson’s letter to the Leader of April 1. You, as two of the three individuals most responsible for the welfare of Jefferson County (not Clallam County) taxpayers, should have been able to ‘do the math’, as Scott easily did.

Most Port Townsend residents (over 6,000 households) regularly read and/or subscribe to the Leader, with the result that any ‘Jefferson County’ business is quickly brought to our attention. Relatively few of us read the PDN, so on a pure ‘cost-per-taxpayer’ basis, the Leader is certainly a better ‘buy’ for our county.

What hurts most about your decision is that in these very difficult times, as many local Port Townsend and Jefferson County businesses struggle to remain solvent, you’ve chosen to shun the newspaper that’s been the voice of this county since 1889. Shame on you!

To Kate Dean; thank you very much for your having done the right thing. We’re confident you worked on our behalf trying to convince your co-commissioners to act appropriately. We’ll remember your thoughtful vote next election time.
