Approximately 203 Jefferson County high school students, wearing caps and gowns, shift tassels from right to left during four graduation ceremonies this week.

The exact numbers of students who are graduating was not available at press time as classes had not yet wrapped up, but preliminary estimates are that 93 students are set to graduate from Port Townsend High School, 84 students from Chimacum High School, 21 students from Quilcene High School and five from Jefferson Community School.

Alexis Mack, valedictorian for Quilcene High School, said she plans to study forensic science and DNA research at Eastern Washington University. She said her class was excited. For her speech, she plans to talk about the future.

“Change can be challenging, but it’s an important part of our lives,” Mack said, reading from the speech she plans to give during the graduation ceremony.

“The road ahead of us is not going to be easy,” she said, but students could adapt to challenges and continue learning as they go along.

“I know that we will be able to find a way to overcome whatever obstacle life decides to throw our way, as we are strong and determined,” she said.

Dates, locations, and valedictorians and salutatorians of the graduation ceremonies are as follows:

Port Townsend High School, 7-9 p.m., Friday, June 9 at McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden.

Chimacum High School, 1 p.m., Saturday, June 10 at McCurdy Pavilion. Holly Snider is valedictorian, and Aelshild Wiklund is salutatorian. An awards ceremony took place June 6 at the CHS auditorium.

Quilcene High School’s commencement is set for 2 p.m., Saturday, June 10 at the QHS gymnasium. Alexis Mae-Lynn Mack is valedictorian, and Katie Bailey is salutatorian. Awards night for the students was June 5.

Jefferson Community School is to graduate five students. The school holds its senior project presentations and graduation on Friday, June 16 at the Chapel at Fort Worden. The graduation reception begins at 5 p.m., and the graduation ceremony begins at 6 p.m.

(Good advice for graduates involved with formal ceremonies: Be sure to write your name in your cap, and also put your name on masking tape and tape it to the inside of your gown, for return. You should hang up your gown so it is not wrinkled for the ceremony.)
