It will have been eight years or so since a majority vote of the public first escaped his grasp, as Trump the other day prematurely announced his third shot at the presidency, via the 2024 Election.

Twitter users mockingly suggested he debuted a new campaign slogan during his announcement, to wit:
“In order to make America great and glorious again I’m announcing my candidacy for president of the United States.”

Wags on social media joked that “Make America Great And Glorious Again” ― or MAGAGA ― would replace Trump’s “Make America Great Again” MAGA acronym.
“The hats’ll have to say MAGAGA — make America great and glorious again. If it makes you gag, get used to it,” cracked a Harvard constitutional law professor. “I tried to say MAGAGA and activated my gag reflex,” actor and comedian John Fugelsang wrote.

A more serous moment was recalled the other day by the Associated Press — specifically about when 106-year-old Virginia McLaurin visited the White House and danced with excitement during a Black History Month observance hosted by President and Michelle Obama in 2016. McLaurin, a sharecropper’s daughter born in 1909, died Nov. 14 at the age of 113. Quite an impression on someone such as I, whose wife is a bit more than 23 years younger.

Continuing on elsewhere from its brief look at results of the mid-term election, the national press noted that the world population has sort of raced its way to surpass 8,000,000,000 (or, stated less impressively, 8 billion). Science seems to be less concerned than I in this regard.

For instance, shortly before I was born in 1929, only some 2 billion souls roamed this planet. Now, almost a mere century later, 8 million of us are beginning elbowing one another. The next billion is expected tp add itself by merely 2037, joining the fast-growing mob quest for fresh air, water, vegetables, etc. I won’t br around by then — but my children, grandchildren, etc. will.

I guess it’s good news that the rate will slow a bit and the 10-billion mark won’t be reached until 2058. Over all, according to the experts, a decline in the world’s population is not expected for about half a century — but how this will be brought about is not explained.

Banishing abortion seems to be a step in the wrong direction.

And please, no finger-pointing. As I shudder as the woman on a TV game show brags about 35 or 40 grandchildren, my parents produced only thre, which is at the moment the exact number of their great-great-grandchildren.

MEANWHILE, Herschel Walker — former football player of note and Republican U.S. Senate dumb-as-a-post candidate in Georgia, faces Democratic incumbent Senator Raphael Warnock in the nation’s most bruising election of the 2022 midterm cycle. Both sides spent heavily on the race while neither candidate reached the 50 percent mark required to seal the election. Per Georgia state election law, Walker and Warnock advance to a head-to-head run-off election. The campaign turned particularly nasty in the hours before the recent preliminary election. The runoff cycle will be no different.

Walker, for his part, raised an eye-popping $3.3 million in the first 24 hours of the new race. But his campaign has had to contend with the presence of former president Donald Trump. Walker’s campaign asked Trump to campaign elsewhere during the race’s closing hours. Walker’s campaign has welcomed the help of popular Republican governors like Brian Kemp of Georgia and Ron DeSantis of Florida.

And . . . Evangelical figures who previously supported Donald Trump are backing off now that he’s announced his third bid for the presidency. “Donald Trump can’t save America,” Mike Evans told The Washington Post. “He can’t even save himself. ”Evans was part of a group of evangelicals who met with Trump at the White House, and at one point gave him an award. Now, he says he’s done with Trump. “He used us to win the White House. We had to close our mouths and eyes when he said things that horrified us,” Evans told the newspaper. “I cannot do that anymore.”

I wonder whom Trump expects to represent on the 2024 ballot. The Republican party certainly can’t want him any more.
