The Port Townsend-Keystone ferry route will be without service this weekend, Jan. 9-10, 2010 for a required annual inspection on the Steilacoom II.

The driving alternative for people on the Olympic Peninsula who would use the PT-Keystone ferry is a four- to six-hour trip using the Edmonds-Kingston ferry to reach I-5, and possibly the Mukilteo-Clinton ferry onto Whidbey Island.

Washington State Ferries are now on a 2010 Winter Sailing schedule through March 27.

Also, late afternoon and evening cancellations on the Port Townsend-Keystone route resume Jan. 27 and continue into February. Check Washington State Ferries specific PT-Keystone cancellation schedule at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/schedules/index.cfm?fuseaction=tide_cancellations&sched_id=107&route=pt-key/

Steilacoom II, leased by the state from Pierce County, is the only ferry that can cross the rough waters of Admiralty Inlet as well as fit into the tight space of Keystone Harbor on Whidbey Island.

More than two years ago – on Nov. 20, 2007 – WSF retired the four circa 1927 Steel Electric ferries, two of which served the PT-Keystone route.

Todd Pacific Shipyards is building the 64-car ferry M/V Chetzemoka, scheduled to go into service here around August 2010. Two more of the ferries have been ordered.
