The most magical time of the year

Wine meets wonder in magician Joey Pipia’s annual performance of “The Magic Chamber,” this year taking place on New Year’s Eve at Joe Euro’s Wine Seller in downtown Port Townsend.

The magic happens right in front of you, sans smoke and mirrors, said Pipia.

“It’s close-up magic – illusion,” said Euro, who has known Pipia for years. “There’s a lot of WTF moments.”

The unique show also leaves audience members feeling inspired, Pipia said.

“It turns out that people come away really feeling wonderful about life and about themselves,” said Pipia, an outcome he hadn’t expected.

Fans of the show can expect a few surprises new to this year’s show. Also new this year is the performance location. Hosting an event at The Wine Seller is something both Euro and Pipia have wanted to do for a while.

“I’ve just always thought his stuff is really amazing,” said Euro, who has hired Pipia to perform at private events.

“[Euro’s] got a really, really great space – it’s a super space,” Pipia said of the old downtown shop, which includes an upstairs gallery.

The event begins at 8 p.m. with a social hour and tastings of wines from around the world, followed by the show. Since the event takes place on New Year’s Eve, Euro said, of course there is to be some bubbles, along with a few snacks. “It should be a lot of fun,” Euro said.

Tickets, $31, are limited; to purchase, go online to

brownpapertickets.com or visit The Wine Seller store, 1010 Water St.
