The Instant Netflix New Release Extravaganza: Part One

Posted

I have been an avid Instant Netflix fan since the beginning, but it was when it became available on the Xbox 360 that I really started using it heavily. Being able to stream a movie on the same tv I play Call of Duty on, without having to put a disc in or switch to another input seems fantastic to me. Hell, I don't even have to get off of the couch at all if I don't want to, which admittedly happens from time to time (especially Sundays).

Sure, there are times when it can be hard to find a quality film, with much of the content devoted to B-Grade trash that I still generally enjoy, but then again, I wouldn't go to Vasu Video and pay three bucks for it. Not that I don't love Vasu, mind you, in fact I recommend that everybody goes there as much as possible, because their selection is all high quality, and the staff is awesome.

Anyways Netflix just signed a major deal that will help balance out the "B" Movies with a little more kick-assery, especially as a few months go by. Paramount, Lionsgate, and MGM all have an extensive back library of films, as well as what's out in theaters now, so I must prepare to lose sleep when I end up choosing to watch Battlefield Earth, when I know I'll turn it off halfway through and watch The Godfather. What a life of shame it is.......

I was lucky enough to stumble upon a site called feedfliks.com a while back, which shows what movies are going to be streaming soon. It also has a very handy free feature that allows you to analyze your Netflix usage. How much does the Black family use theirs? A lot. We pay six cents a movie when you total DVD's plus instant usage, which puts us in the 90th percentile amongst feedfliks users.

What I am going to use feedfliks for today is a breakdown of notable movies, according to me, that are coming out on September 1st, day one of when the new contract kicks in. On that note, let's get going shall we?

Note: When I started this I had no idea how many good movies were coming out, so I had to split this into two parts. These are in no particular order, just what sequence feedfliks actually lists each movie, so you may see much more notable movies after those less so (aka the new Star Trek after Species).

1. Battlefield Earth - Any regulars know I rip on this movie constantly, as far as I know (which is about halfway through) for good reason. Just listen to Ebert and Roeper have to say about it:

2. De-Lovely - Stars Kevin Kline, who to me is like a poor man's Jeff Bridges, and is about a famous 20th century composer who I've never heard of. Supposed to be pretty decent though.

3. The Goods:Live Hard, Sell Hard - I actually got to watch with my bro Big Ed and it was pretty g-d enjoyable I must say. Think Used Cars with Jeremy Piven (in his typecast Ari-Mode best) replacing the legendary Kurt Russell.

4. Jason's Lyric - Stars Jada Pinkett-Smith (Will Smith's wife and head of the most perfectly hateable family in Hollywood). She gets naked a lot, which was notable when I was fourteen and my parents allowed me to rent R-Rated movies. It might even been good too I don't remember.

5. The Godfather: Part II - I'm not one to debate which one was better, but I do love the whole trial plotline and the super villainous Hyman Roth. Plus it's pretty awesome when his father gets revenge on Don Ciccio.

6. Nick of Time - A terrible Johnny Depp movie, his worst besides Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3, and the upcoming number 4. He also sucked in Alice in Wonderland, comon' Johnny!

7. Ladybugs - Rodney Dangerfield plays as a volunteer girl's soccer coach. This movie probably got written in an hour and Dangerfield probably still brought the good stuff.

8. The Love Guru - When Justin Timberlake and Jessica Alba are supposed to support the comedic downfall of Mike Myers, thinks aren't so good.

9. Throw Mamma From the Train - When I tell people I dislike Billy Crystal, a lot say "you haven't seen Throw Mamma from the Train?" Well yes, I have, and the only redeeming part was seeing ole Mamma Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) in one of her last movie roles.

10. Life After People: Season 1 - NICE! I didn't know this was coming out until just now. It's basically shows the waiting time until famous buildings fall down if we don't take care of them.

11. Little Monsters - I would be totally stoked to see this one again if I was nine years old, it was pretty dang cool back in the day. Now it's a little creepy and weird if you think about it, but still creative nonetheless.

12. Shine a Light - Martin Scorsese doc about the Rolling Stones. My dad said he loved it.

13. The Pelican Brief - Starring the world's most boring actress, Julia Roberts. All women who used to read this have probably now stopped.

14. Clifford - Saw this piece of crap in theaters with my brother and sisters back when I was fourteen. Martin Short (another unfunny comedian) plays a rowdy young boy, which was odd. Shoulda gone to see Jason's Lyric.

15. Carrie - Classic horror flick based on the Steven King novel. The last twenty minutes with the pigs blood and subsequent prom slaughter are still brutal, meaning awesome.

16. Species - Probably could fall into the Jason's Lyric mold of a skin flick, but once you get past the boobs it's actually a decent sci-fi movie. Species 2? Nope.

17. Aeon Flux - Aeon Flop. Seriously don't see this unless you are scared of grass, then you might get a thrill from it. Maybe.

18. Pawn Stars: Season 2 - I know a lot of people who watch this show, but I'm generally not one of them. Doesn't mean it's not any good.

19. Major League II - A solid sequel, but once you've seen the first, you're not missing much.

20. Summer School - Starring everybody's favorite ex-UCLA quarterback not named Rick Neuheisel, Mark Harmon. I remember loving the scene where they watch the Texas Chainsaw Massacre as part of class.

21. Frogs - They used to play this unintentional horror comedy all the time on TBS back in the day. The only part I really remember is the cartoon at the end where a big frog is swallowing a dude. The special effects budget and know-how were probably so low they couldn't have pulled it off otherwise. I'm definitely re-watching this one.

22. Robocop 2 - Great sequel. The battle between Robocop and the oft-imitated (and cleverly named) "Robocop 2" prototype at the end still kills it. Directed by Irvin Kershner, who you may know as director of Empire Strikes Back aka greatest movie ever.

23. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - "Nuke the Fridge" indeed. My mom loved it though so going to the Rose Theater to see it had its winners.

24. Over the Top - Sylvester Stallone plays Lincoln Hawk, who needs the prize money from an underground arm wrestling tournament to save his son from having Robert Loggia as his custody parent. HA! That sounds like a winner to me.

25. Bio-Dome - William Atherton turned down a prominent role in Ghostbusters 2 so he could do a movie with Pauly Shore and Stephen Baldwin anchoring as the main stars. He must have been as high as they were when he signed that contract.

26. Childs Play - Still love this movie. Favorite part is when Chucky talks for the first time. The mother is threatening to throw him in the fire unless he says something, so something along the lines of "YOU F-IN B****!" comes right out. Sweeeeeeeeeeet.

27. Fire in the Sky - I've always been a UFO fan. This movie has a guy getting kidnapped into one and probed. Crappy few days for him.

28. World Trade Center - You know nepotism is involved when we have the greatest recent tragedy our country has seen and none other than Nicholas Cage (director Oliver Stone's nephew) has the lead role.

29. Fled - I faintly remember enjoying this one. Salma Hayek being involved had to help.

30. The Duchess - I'm not the biggest fan of Kiera Knightley, but the trailers for this one made it look good. I could be waaaaaaaaaaay off though and I wouldn't care because I think she sucks.

31. The Burbs - Is my favorite Tom Hanks movie, no doubt, no doubt in my mind. Paranoia is rampant in the suburbs after the creepy new neighbors move in. Directed by one of my all-time favs, Joe Dante (Gremlins, The Howling).

32. Showgirls - Has an massive cult following due to it's utter failure at making anything resembling a serious movie. Pretty great at times, don't watch it around kids though.

33. Friday the 13th: 1-10 million - I lumped all of these together since theirs too damn many and they're all pretty similar. Marathon is planned.

34. The Godfather - When Michael sets up the money shot at the end and.........wait you haven't seen it? WTF is your problem? Okay I won't spoil it for you if you haven't, but the fact that it is in just about any top five list of all-time movies is very well justified. It's all about family, but don't watch it with them if they can't handle a little of the good ol' violence.

35. UHF - A feature film for Weird Al Yankovick, what more can I say?

36. Empire of the Ants - Another TBS Saturday morning horror staple that I enjoyed very, very much. Probably a great background movie for a drunken party, people would walk up and be all "what the hell are you watching?" then sit through a whole half of it.

37. 1492: Conquest of Paradise - Directed by Ridley Scott, about the invention of the internet, obviously.

38. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - Hard for me to decide which of the first three I liked best, but this one was pretty dang good. Sean Connery's presence might give it a slight edge.

39. Art School Confidential - Very "meh". About a stuck up art school student who really wants to get with a chick who poses naked in his class. Gets extra points for having the guy who does the robot voice a lot in Grandmas Boy.

40. Species II - I had a neighbor whose uncle worked on the props for this movie. During filming this neighbor got to talk to his uncle, and since this neighbor was excited that a sequel he asked his uncle how awesome it was going to be. His response: "very, very terrible. Do not see at any cost." He was right.

41. 48 Hours - An Eddie Murphy "classic" that I honestly have never seen. It came out during the start of his prime, when he hadn't fallen into "Dr DoLittle of Anything Worth Watching" mode. Why was everybody so excited he was doing Dreamgirls? Cause he was singing? Yeah, he released an album or two, and it didn't go terrifically well.

42. Gods and Monsters - A movie I'll get to if I have time. Ian McKellan (aka Gandalf and Magneto) plays James Whale, who famously directed Bride of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man.

43. Tentacles - And yet another TBS Saturday morning staple. Think "Jaws", but with an Octopus. The storys pretty much the exact same too. Big fan.

44. Ax Men: Seasons 1 and 2 - Haven't watched this one except for thirty second stretches, they always seem to be throwing a rope around massive trees whilst nearly getting their hands torn off. Couldn't handle that job for five minutes.

45. Universal Soldier - Van Damme's finest, he battles Dolph Lundgren, which makes it doubly cheesey/awesome.

46. Mermaids - Cher plays a single mother in what I know as a major chick flick, got heavy plays amongst mom and the sisters, as the boys tried not to vomit.

47. Defiance - Mr Bond himself, Daniel Craig, protects and leads fellow Jewish freedom fighters in the forests of Poland during World War II. Decent, can get a little boring at times, but worth a watch.

48. Monkey Shines - I remember the trailer well, and after reading the plot I am interested: Quadriplegic law student Allen man gets in-home care from Ella, a supersmart monkey injected with human brain tissue. Hilarity ensues, meaning terror.

49. Eddie and the Cruisers II: Eddie Lives - Sequel to a Black family favorite. Funny thing is that in this one he just changes his name and people don't realize it's him, even when he forms a new band. Think if Paul McCartney went out and renamed himself Joe Blow and started a new band. We wouldn't be like "Who's this new Joe Blow guy, he rocks!" We'd be like "what's Paul McCartney doing? Trying to pull a Garth Brooks and do a crappy rock album but call him Chris Gaines?"

50. Event Horizon - Very watchable claustrophobic deep space horror movie starring Lawrence Fishburne. People go nuts and kill each other.

Okay that's it for part one, look for part two on my blogs homepage - DoUbLe B
