Superheroes concoct strange brews

Strange Brewfest had a sweet year as Pacific Northwest brewers brought dessert-like craft beers to the 15th annual gathering Jan. 24-25. Coconut cream pie, strawberry mango cheesecake, spiced chai, praline and Girl Scout “Samoa” cookies were just some of the strange, sugary brews entered into the competition this year. “We took a light and neutral blonde beer and added a touch of vanilla and maple syrup,” said Mike Montoney of Silver City Brewery, which brought the Coconut Cream Pie blonde ale to brewfest. “Then we added a pound and a half of toasted coconut.” The crazy concoctions were served up by superheroes (and a few villains), since this year’s theme encouraged attendees to wear capes.   While many of the new flavors were sweet, some savory classics returned. Bainbridge Brewing brought its Cool Ranch Dorito “Beerito” back for a third year. “It’s become so popular that people come in and request it at the brewery,” said Russell Everett of Bainbridge Brewing. “But we only make it for Strange Brewfest.” Bainbridge also brought the savory “Lord of the Flies” beer — a stout with a smoked pig head. “We give our spent grain to pigs at a nearby farm and in exchange each year they give us a pig to eat,” Everett said. Everett boiled down the pig’s head and flavored the stout with the smoked pork and black pepper. “I thought that’d be super metal to use the pig’s head,” he said. Bad Jimmy’s Brewing brought a bourbon barrel-aged milk stout topped with raspberry bourbon whipped cream, which was strange for tasters at first but quickly caught on, brewer Seth Mashni said. “At first people were asking for it without the whipped cream,” he said. “But if they tried it, they liked it.” Mashni said creating weird flavors is what he enjoys most about the festival. “This is our favorite brewfest by far,” Mashni said. “I think about what I’m going to make a year in advance. I came up with my ideas for next year already.” The floor of the American Legion’s music hall got stickier as the festival went on, but that did not stop the crowd from getting down to funky tunes by Eldridge Gravy (aka Batman) and his Court Supreme (including Wonder Woman, Quailman, Supreme Court Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Mario).
