I am a former Chimacum School Board director, serving two terms from 2013 to 2021. Over my years on the board, I had the pleasure of working with a number of remarkable student directors. The two students now completing their time on the board are outstanding in an already spectacular field.
Through their participation on the board, Eugenia Phillips Frank and Ava Vaughan-Misfud have provided a voice for their peers. Their reports have been thoughtful, well-written, honest, straightforward reflections of the thoughts and concerns of their colleagues, presented graciously. I always appreciated the candor with which they reported the questions conversations and viewpoints, and gave voice to all students and perspectives. I always knew I could count on an authentic report, complete with input from all, respectfully represented. As a board member I valued this input and the genuine way it was presented.
At this age, I know I didn’t have the bravery to speak to a room of educated, passionate, opinionated adults, holding advanced degrees, well-paying jobs, and elected positions, especially on contentious topics. I am so impressed with the courage, integrity, and strength shown by these student directors.
Ava and Eugenia: Thank you for keeping your voice strong. It is invaluable to those who will listen. Don’t silence yourself when there are those who will not. And especially, be wary of those who would take your voice from you, and don’t let them without a fight. As you finish your time at Chimacum and head out to the next chapter in your journeys, I should give you my best wishes — but you don’t need my wishes, although you do have my respect and admiration, and congratulations on a job well done. You are astounding and are going to do amazing things.
Assuredly. Thank you for your service to Chimacum.
