Port Townsend High School hosts its first-ever cross country meet on Wednesday with the Port Townsend Golf Course as a venue, while the Chimacum and PT volleyball teams are preparing for their first home matches this season. Here is the sports wrap as of Sept. 29:

Soccer

PT HAS HOME MATCHES

A stretch of four consecutive matches could help the Port Townsend High School girls soccer find the win column, including an Oct. 11 match with winless Chimacum.

North Mason blanked PT (0-4 league, 0-6 overall) on Sept. 23 and the Olympic High Junior Varsity won 1-0 on Sept. 25.

North Mason scored 4 goals scored within 20 minutes, putting the game well beyond the reach of a short-numbered PT squad, reported coach Colin Foden. "The rain came down incessantly and PT made little headway against a well organized NM varsity squad. The highlight of the evening was another outstanding goal-keeping display my Mailia Henderson."

Against the Olympic JV, the Redhawks were clearly outplayed in the first half after letting in a freak goal in the first minute, Foden noted. The second half, however, was a different story. PT created a number of chances and looked like a different team, the coach said. Emily Franklin, Kaitlyn Meek and Hannah Marx looked dangerous on attack and McKinzie Clinther was outstanding in defense. Tyler Iseke-Wade played with confidence and creativity. "PT welcomed Bethany Lynch for her first game and she played very well and learned quickly what it takes to play at this level. In spite of injuries each player worked hard and showed real commitment."

ROGERS TRIUMPHS

Chimacum had a 6-1 match loss Sept. 25 to Klahowya. The team, short-handed due to some players performing community counseling service, lost to Klahowya "in their beautiful, pastoral athletic setting", said coach Mark Calogero.

"We had some mismatched doubles teams due to the shortage of personnel and didn't pick up a winning point there," he said.

Jonny Rogers upped his second singles record to 3-1 with another arduous effort against a pernicious left-handed opponent, fighting back to force a second-set tie-break, which he lost. He then emerged victorious in a final set, "super" tie-break, 10-4, winning the match.

Wednesday's scheduled match against Olympic was postponed due to damp courts.

NEXT: Coupeville visits for a 4 p.m. Oct. 2 match at the Port Townsend High School courts, Klahowya at CHS Oct. 8, at Klahowya.

Cross Country

PTHS HOSTS OCT. 1 MEET

The Port Townsend Cross Country meet on Oct. 1 is at the Port Townsend Golf Club on Blaine Street. This is a change in venue from last year. "It will be a great course for both spectators and athletes and I am extremely grateful to the PTGC for allowing us access to this site," said coach Alice Fraser. Boys JV run at 4 p.m., varsity boys at 4:30, and girls at 5.

The Redhawks swept the competition against North Mason and Klahowya Sept. 24 in Belfair. The athletes faced a challenging, hilly, and wet 3.1 mile course and ran strong to take team titles in both the boys and girls varsity races. Senior Ryan Clarke and sophomore Brennan LaBrie went 1-2 in the varsity boys race with sophomore Jack Kingsley, senior Mark Streett, and sophomore Alejandro Montanez all within 13 seconds of each other.

Ninth-grader Ally Bradley won the girls varsity race with a composed finish over Cassandra Pastori of Klahowya. Senior Hanna Trailer and sophomore Mimi Grant were also in the top 10.

The boys JV team finished 2nd after early-leader sophomore River Yearian took a wrong turn and finished middle of the pack. Jesus Duran was 2nd overall followed by junior Adam Braude.

NEXT: Oct. 1st at home against Bremerton and North Kitsap.

CHIMACUM WINS

Chimacum High School's first volleyball win of the season came Sept. 24, 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 against Crescent.

"Crescent gained a lot of points on our hitting errors," reported coach Samantha Archambault. "We're still moving people around in an attempt to find a formula that works for us. Alyssa Hamilton stepped out of the libero position for this game to hit outside, her passing was on point this game and her hitting was strategic. After the game the Crescent coach said, "Number 14 (referring to Alyssa) may be your best hitter but she should be your libero, she's awesome."

Junior Ryley Eldridge stepped into the libero position for the first time in her volleyball career. Junior Sophia Thurston is one to watch as a middle hitter, Archambault said. "She has improved leaps and bounds over the last couple of weeks to become a reliable go-to hitter."

Swimming

RIDERS SINK REDHAWKS

Powerful Port Angeles defeated Port Townsend 120-62 in Olympic League swim action Sept. 25. It was "certainly the Redhawk Swim and Dive Team's biggest challenge so far," reported coach Peter Braden. PA is defending league and district champion.

"They are the team to beat in the district and should do exceptionally well at state. Our caps are off to them." said Braden. PTHS showed its strength in freestyle, finishing 1st, 3rd, and 5th in the 50 free, 1st, 3rd, and 4th in the 100 free, and winning the 200 free relay.

Crystal Crump swam in her first meet and already met her goal time of 1:15 in the 100 free. Hannah Welch competed as a diver in her first meet ever, receiving 7.5 marks on her first dive. The meet was the team's first opportunity for diving and saw Keira Matkins finishing 2nd and Welch 4th.

This meet was the first of the year in a regulation size pool and as such was the first opportunity to qualify for the district meet.

PTHS district qualifiers were: 200 Medley Relay of Corinne Pierson, Tanner Matthew, Corinna Snider, Ismay Gale. 200 Free Keira Matkins (Emily Harrenstein missed qualifying by .58 seconds). 50 Free Rose Ridder, Chloe Rogers, Ismay Gale. 100 Fly Camille Ottaway. 100 Free Ridder, Rogers, Gale. 500 Free Ottaway. 200 Free Relay Ridder, Matkins, Matthew, Rogers. 100 Back Pierson. 100 Breast Matthew. 400 Free Relay Ridder, Gale, Matkins, Rogers (The "B" Relay of Ottaway, Pierson, Welch, Matthew missed the qualifying mark by .65 seconds)

NEXT: Kingston visits PT for a 3:30 p.m. meet Thursday, Oct. 2 at Mountain View Pool. The original plan was to stage the "home" meet in Sequim, but it's back in PT. "While the team is disappointed to miss out on an opportunity to swim and dive in a regulation size pool and qualify for district and state the bright side is swimming for our hometown fans."
