Snow brings out Port Townsend’s best | Letter to the editor

Whenever it snows here there is this sudden change in our landscape and the silence that creates a different kind of wonder within my heart.

It renews my faith in other people somehow when all of a sudden your neighbor shovels out your driveway early in the day without being asked and someone calls to ask you if you need any food when they go to the store.

It’s a reminder of the best part of ourselves; the way some of us leave our own comfort zone and think of the person who has little food or creature comforts we can take for granted.

When it’s 23 degrees outside we hopefully think about our pets and the birds outside and how we each hunger to stay alive and endure and change our attitudes.

We take time to really look outside, and see the miracles of being alive and focusing on the way snow changes us. I lived in Vermont for many wonderful years and when the snow fell I never ceased to be amazed how the hills and roads were transformed into a true winter wonderland. Now after 26 years I can still feel that sense of wonderment whenever I begin walking in the snow with my dog.

Children and dogs delight in the snow and if I could keep that level of surprise and joy I too  could re-capture that moment of looking out the window and seeing SNOW!

It has its own kind of music in a way.

Be careful when you drive and protect our wildlife with taking time to slow down and breathe all this fresh winter air.

Thanks to all who clear the roads and help others who are older and more fragile.
