Smith is ready to lead as commissioner | Letter to the editor

Lorna Smith’s remarks at the Virtual Fish Feast sponsored by Jefferson County Democrats on Aug. 23 began with a quote that sailors will understand.

“The pessimist complains about the wind, the optimist expects it to change, the realist adjusts the sails.”

Lorna is a realist who knows how to adjust the sails without losing sight of the destination. When people suffer from lack of housing and jobs, when people of color and immigrants say they don’t feel welcome here, we are due for a course correction.

Lorna has lived in other cultures, speaks another language, has a multi-racial family, and is sponsoring an asylum applicant. These experiences give Lorna a broader perspective that will benefit Jefferson County as we strive to create a more fair and welcoming place for everyone.

Lorna reminded us that hundreds of county citizens came together to create the Jefferson County Comprehensive Plan. The plan includes policies for affordable housing, healthy communities and a sustainable economy. It also includes a promise to honor tribal treaty rights.

Lorna is ready to lead. Affordable housing: In Snohomish County Lorna fought for affordable housing and shepherded multiple projects through a maze of regulations. Climate action: Lorna helped lead a coalition that stopped construction of the Northern Tier Pipeline which threatened the Peninsula and our marine waters. Broadband: Lorna has driven dozens of complex multi-jurisdictional infrastructure projects across the finish line. She will bring all of Jefferson County into the digital age.

Vote Lorna Smith for commissioner!
