Smart Farmers

I was shocked to read the article last week about the Buffalo. Glad to see a community effort to repair the problem.

It seems its another example of poor farmers and poor farming practices, which makes me think about the uncute sign up on Center Valley Road.

This poor farmer blames his poor farming practices on beavers and salmon. Rather than being an innovative and successful farmer, he degenerates modern ecological practices. If one were to study the current international ag literature one would find that you become more profitable if you follow ecological and cutting edge techniques.

Our counties problem is that we have not fully embraced the newest and smartest methods to farm and create environmental services at the same time.

In fact you can often get paid for the latter and thus are getting paid twice.

If this buffalo farmer was in trouble I wished that he would have thought outside the box and learned to tap into the limitless resources there are available for modern ag that can assist us in smart farming practices that values and rewards both the farmers and the land.
