Slick roads and fallen trees herald the New Year

High winds the evening of New Year’s Day left chaos behind as officials struggled to restore power to nearly 2,000 residents overnight and into the following day. Downed trees on power lines challenged Jefferson County Public Utilities employees, who worked diligently to restore voltage  from Quilcene to Marrowstone Island  to Port Ludlow.

At last count, 237 people were without power at the close of Sunday, Jan. 2.

Compounding the power outages was more precipitation county-wide.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, county officials announced that road crews were  clearing 3 inches to 6 inches of wet, heavy, new snow on higher elevation roads from Eaglemount and Center to Coyle.

While lowland snowfall was not widely forecast, meteorologists advised that the heavy rain across the area brought snow levels down to the surface, and this may continue into early Monday morning.

County officials cautioned drivers to stay vigilant, even on main roads that were clear early in the day.
