Officers with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) responded to 317 calls for service during the week of March 13-20. Among the calls were 1 animal bite, 2 reports of assault, 4 burglaries, 2 disorderly-conduct incidents, 4 reports of disturbances, 4 DUIs, 5 reports of fraud, 6 harassment reports, 4 noise complaints, 2 runaway juveniles, 2 suicide attempts, 1 sexual offense, 6 reports of theft, 81 traffic stops (5 criminal), 3 court-order violations, 1 marine incident and 14 welfare checks.

The incidents below are not all encompassing and represent a portion of incidents to which the JCSO responded.

The Sheriff’s Office received a report at 9:43 p.m., March 16 of activated marine flares being observed over the water somewhere between the Port Townsend ferry dock and Whidbey Island. The U.S. Coast Guard received more than 12 reports of flare sightings from Tacoma to Victoria, British Columbia, and out to Neah Bay. The Coast Guard believes the reported sightings were of meteors.

At 10:38 a.m., March 17, deputies responded to a Port Hadlock business parking lot to conduct a welfare check of a woman, who appeared asleep while seated in her car. The vehicle was running and the woman’s foot rested on the brake pedal. It was only after numerous attempts that a deputy was able to wake the woman. The woman’s physical condition led the deputy to believe she was under the influence of drugs. After failing field sobriety tests, the woman was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Deputies responded to the Horseshoe Lake area at 10:36 p.m., March 17 after receiving a report of an individual being run over by a vehicle. A group of six individuals was contacted, and deputies were told that one of them had been run over after their vehicle became high-centered in some heavy brush. After the vehicle became stuck, members were attempting to free it by rocking it back and forth, with the car in gear, when they heard screaming and discovered that a person in their party was trapped under the vehicle. The group was able to free the individual, who was later transported by aid personnel to Harrison Medical Center. A preliminary evaluation by paramedics on the scene indicated that the victim had suffered broken bones. The driver of the vehicle was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular assault.

JCSO received a report of a boat fire at a private dock in the Pleasant Harbor area in Brinnon at 4:41 p.m., March 18. A deputy responded and learned that the fire was started when an iron that had been placed on the engine block to keep it warm had fallen onto the alternator’s positive lead wire and shorted the wiring, causing it to catch fire, nearly igniting the wooden frame. Brinnon and Quilcene fire departments responded to the scene and extinguished the fire.

A sheriff’s deputy responded to the Port Hadlock QFC at 3:28 a.m., March 19 after receiving a report of a woman attempting to pass a counterfeit $100 bill. The clerk refused to accept the fake bill, and the female left the store. Deputies were unable to locate the suspect.

JCSO received a report of a man being bitten by a feral cat at 3:04 a.m., March 20. The victim reported that a feral cat had gotten into his house and had bitten him, and that he (the victim) would be going to a doctor in the morning.
