Schooner Adventuress comes ashore for maintenance, inspection

Posted

The historic schooner Adventuress will be coming ashore for a little routine maintenance and a hull inspection from the Coast Guard at the Port of Port Townsend's Boat Haven Marina Monday.

The historic, 133-foot ship — built in 1913 — will be getting some fresh bottom paint and captains Katelinn Shaw and Nate Seward will oversee a project to revise the ship's cathodic protection plan that protects submerged metals from corrosion.

Haven Boatworks, the group that oversaw Adventuress' $2.3 million, decade-long restoration, will also be on hand while she's up on the hard as the group's shipwrights work to plan for the re-rigging of the vessel’s topmasts for the 2023 season. Her topmasts were removed prior to Haven re-decking the boat in 2019.

When the return of the masts will also have to coincide with a re-ballasting of the boat with 2,800 pounds of lead into her keel.

Sound Experience, the group that operates Adventuress as a floating platform for maritime and environmental education programs, hopes to get her underway by April. The group intends to offer week-long dockside and on-the-water education programs for schools families, learning "pods" and community organizations.
