I had my newly rescued terrier overcome and pinned by two very large dogs at the Chetzemoka dog park today. I had my back turned and was trying to latch the gate when I heard snarling and yelping. I had to pull up the collar of the large brown Doodle to get it off my dog.
In the meantime, I got told by the owner of said dog that it was MY fault because “my energy was bad.”
Let’s go over the basic rules of owner/dog etiquette at the dog park: Let the incoming owner and their dog have enough space when they arrive. Keep your dogs away from the door as people arrive. Do not allow big dogs to surround a person before they’ve even had a chance to come in the gate. If you do NOT have voice command over your dog, you shouldn’t be there. If your dog attacks smaller dogs, they should NEVER be allowed in the dog park system here. And when you see your dog attacking another dog, try and speed up your pace to save the situation rather than sauntering and blaming.
I am still trying to overcome my shock at this owner’s complete disregard for other’s safety. You want to talk bad energy? The next time I see your dog, there will be Mace in my pocket.

Untrained dogs and oblivious owners can be a real pain. You have every right to carry mace if you feel that you or your dog are threatened. When I walk my local trails which are out in the county I carry my sidearm, not because I want to shoot anything but because there are cougars out there and I figure it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

When did Chetzemoka get a dog park?

Dogs and there people. What can they do? They just want a place to run free (the dogs, maybe the people), get your owners to talk to each other.
As to carrying a gun in case a cougar might be lurking, perhaps you should get a dog. Cougars have a lot of respect for dogs and don't like to mess with them, people either for that matter. But this is America and you have your precious 2nd amendment right to carry and kill.

Carrying weapons of any kind around dogs being dogs baffles me entirely. What is wrong with people?

Marge, do a simple Google search and you will see that there are such things as people being attacked by animals, have you never heard about people being mauled by pit bulls? ever hear about that lady in Levenworth who was attacked by a bear, how about the hiker in the Olympics who was killed by a goat? Obviously you are ignorant when you say "Cougars have a lot of respect for dogs and don't like to mess with them, people either for that matter" but if you want to believe that krap you are free to.
Also, if you choose to not exercise your precious constitutional rights you are free to.
Hellozetta, people bringing their untrained dog to a off leash park putting others in peril baffles me, what's wrong with people?

Every time I read your comments I have the same question. "What's wrong with people"

Ditto MS.
Tell me how it's somehow wrong for a person to protect themself from harm or their pet from attack by untrained and undisciplined dogs? When/if you find your person threatened with violence who do you call?, a person with a gun!
Hypocrite.

People with hand guns use that excuse all the time. there are roughly 72 million handguns in the U.S. They are used to kill people. Get rid of hand guns, save some lives.
How many people in Jefferson County have been killed by a cougar? by a dog? You need to back up and get some common sense. Quit your fearmongering. If your scared of everything out there, stay home.

If your scared of people lawfully carrying guns to protect themselves and others from harm you should stay home.
MS I believe you are misinformed about part ( a lot of that going around) of the 2nd amendment. It absolutely does not give you the right to kill.
Part of fearmongering would be misstating rules and laws because you are scared yourself of guns.

MS wrote:" You need to back up and get some common sense. Quit your fearmongering." Since when is exercising my Constitutional rights "fearmongering"?.
MS, are you also going to tell M.Stryker to leave her mace at home?
Yes Marge guns are made to shoot things, that's why the police and security people carry them. I'm curious Marge, have you sent any aid to Ukraine? you have through your taxes.

Can't choose where my taxes go. An off leash dog park is fine, I am sure Ms Stryker will report her encounter to the city of Port Townsend and others will follow the rules, except there are always those who don't think the rules apply to them, is she using the mace on the dogs or their owners?

True enough, you can't choose how your tax dollars are spent, just wondered if you have sent $ to a fund Ukraine site.
I agree that off-leash dog parks are fine, when my dog was alive we would take her to a beach park, my dog was well trained and knew her space, never had a problem with other dogs, if I had experienced that which M. Stryker had I would give serious thought to carrying some bear repellant.
