Steve King will take over as acting city manager for Port Townsend from the end of January through early March while City Manager John Mauro is on vacation.
Mauro will be on vacation leave from Jan. 26 through March 2, according to a memo Mauro sent to the city council and city department directors Jan. 9.
The city council is expected to approve a resolution at its meeting next week to make King, the city's public works director, the acting city manager during Mauro's absence.
"As you know, Steve and other department directors work very hard and departments are, in most cases, understaffed," Mauro told the council in his Jan. 9 memo. "Therefore, I am asking for a coordinated, proactive, and collaborative approach by all department directors to cover anything that needs attention while I am away."
Mauro noted that he would be "intermittently accessible" by telephone and text while he is away with family on vacation.
"For anything truly extraordinary, I have faith and trust in the excellent department team to work together to problem solve, share the load and get through – as they’ve been doing all along," Mauro noted in the memo.
