PTHS to hold graduation at drive-in theater

Port Townsend High School announced this month that the June 12 graduation ceremony for the class of 2020 will be held at the Wheel-in Motor Movie theater just outside of town.

Attendees can stay in their cars to keep a safe distance from others as restrictions on large gatherings will likely last through the summer.

PTHS principal’s secretary Jan Boutilier said the school is staying open to the possibilty that with ever-changing restrictions plans may have to change but for now they are planning to be at the drive-in theater. What the event will look like in terms of programming, speeches or performances is unknown.

She said the school is looking at creative ideas about how to move forward but so much is uncertain they can’t give any definite assertions.

She said capacity at the Wheel-In Motor Movie theater is significantly les than that of McCurdy Pavilion where PTHS graduations normally take place.

PTHS Principal Carrie Erhart estimated McCurdy Pavilion could seat between 850 and 1,000 people while the drive-in theater may only be able to hold 130 cars, which would mean a fairly strict one-car-per-graduate allowance.
