A 24-year-old man was charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot his mother, as she was attempting to drive away on Discovery Road and Eddy Street at around 2 a.m. on June 28. Casey Scott Carter was booked at the Jefferson County Jail around 5 a.m. Acting police chief Troy Surber reported that Carter’s mother had asked him to exit the vehicle. He got out and then fired a .38 caliber revolver into the rear window of the car as his mother attempted to drive away. The bullet shattered the rear window, and passed through the rear and front seats before it struck the victim. The bullet hit her shoulder, but did not penetrate her skin due to the loss of velocity and the sweatshirt she was wearing. The bullet was found in the hood of her sweatshirt, Serber said. The bullet did cause injury to the victim’s shoulder, Surber said, and will likely cause major bruising, but it was not life-threatening. Washington State Patrol was assisting Port Townsend Police Department Friday morning with K-9 units to find the gun. A probable cause statement will be filed Monday morning, Surber said.
