The American Legion Marvin G Shields Memorial Post 26 in Port Townsend is hosting a Veterans Day celebration on Saturday, Nov. 11. at 10 a.m. The PT Summer Band will play a concert of patriotic music and Post Commander Wyatt Ranson will offer a Veterans’ Day address recognizing members with 20 years or more with the post.
Scott Wessels, Les Waldren and Tom Rybarski and other fallen veterans will be honored with a moment of silence followed by a bagpiper playing “Amazing Grace” and “Taps.” Bob Sarin, sergeant at arms, will lead a color guard of local scouts.
The local American Legion has 407 members and provides help with VA claims, financial assistance, home repairs, construction of ramps for homes and scholarships for vets, families and independent youth in the community.
Going beyond the scope of veterans, the post also gives back to the community by providing a place for youth and community events. The hall will host a Magic of Christmas event through December.
“Our biggest goal in the community is to propel youth programs and provide a place for youth to utilize for events,” said Commander Ranson.
