The conflict between Port Townsend resident Julie Jaman and the YMCA — now the subject of a demand letter from her lawyers — garnered a lot of attention in 2022.
She was permanently banned from the YMCA’s Mountain View campus pool that July after confronting a transgendered pool employee about being in the women’s locker room. In August, Jaman and supporters called a press conference across from Port Townsend City Hall. The controversy became the subject of national media interest, drawing news coverage from outlets ranging from KOMO and The Stranger to The New York Post and Fox News.
These photos, from Sept. 3, 2022, were taken of a protest held at Pope Marine Park that included members of the right-wing militia group Washington State Three Percenters and other similar organizations. They were met by a larger group of attendees supporting trans rights, numbering 250 people in total.
