The arts community of Port Townsend has a new pot of options for creative expression.

Local potter Tori Power and Mike McGregor have begun offering a series of pottery classes at a new studio space in Port Townsend starting Sunday, Feb. 12.

“I’ve been wanting there to be a place like this for years and when the space became available we just jumped on it,” Power said.

Power graduated with a degree in fine arts in 2014 where she focused on pottery and has worked as a teacher’s assistant in the past, but this will be her first time using those skills to fill in shifts alongside 30-year vessel veteran Charlie VanGilder.

“I won’t be teaching very often. This is my first time kind of dipping in to teaching,” Power said.

“Charlie will be the official teacher for most of the adult classes,” she added.

Those classes with VanGilder include “Beginning Handbuilding” on Sundays, and “Beginning Wheel” on Mondays, both for ages 13 and up.

“They’re both a way that you structure the pot. Wheel throwing is everything you would see on a wheel — you know in ‘Ghost,’ — and hand building is anything with slabs or coils,” Power said.

Coils are ropes of clay used to build structures, and slabs of clay can be put together on edges to build structures like boxes.

For kids ages 8 to 12, they’re also offering a “Pots 4 Plants” class with Power’s mother, Linda.

“She has a background in early education and she loves teaching art,” Power said.

“They’ll be building them with raw clay and they’ll be glazing them. She has a bunch of ideas of what she would like the kids to make,” she added.

They’ve already sold out their Tuesday “Beginning Wheel” class and are excited to see how they can grow the business.

“We only have four wheels right now, so we’re looking for more equipment so that we can have larger classes in the future,” Power said.

People who sign-up for the classes will receive a 25-pound bag of clay which they can also use during open hours in the studio to work on projects, Power said.

Adult sessions run eight classes once a week plus open studio hours for $385, and kids will receive eight classes once a week for $250.

For artists of all trades, they have private studio spaces available for rent in the building, as well.
