Port Townsend Police Log | 'Swedes are around'

The Port Townsend Police Department received a total of 100 calls between Friday, Nov. 25, and Thursday, Dec. 1. Below are selected reports.

At 5:27 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, a caller reported a fire in the 900 block of Haines Place. A boat building was on fire, and law enforcement handled traffic control while firefighters doused the flames.

At 11:27 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, in the 1600 block of Walnut Street, a welfare check was requested after a friend was having trouble contacting a resident who lived alone. An officer contacted the resident, who was at home and in good health. The person promised to call back the friend.

At 3:31 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, gunshots were heard in the 1900 block of Ninth Street. Officers searched the area and were unable to find anyone.

At 7:24 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, in the 800 block of Sheridan Street, a hospital employee reported an unwanted man had returned who was previously escorted from the property.

The man claimed that he needed treatment for his broken clavicle, but had already been treated earlier.

Officers contacted the man but he declined an offer to be driven to a nearby warming shelter. At the man’s request, he was dropped off in the 2500 block of Evans Vista. Officers gave the man water bottles, hand warmers, a blanket, and a beanie hat. The man later admitted that he went to the hospital seeking morphine.

At 12:41 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, officers responded to an alarm call in the 3900 block of San Juan Avenue after a security system was sounded at the middle school. Law enforcement searched the school campus, and all the doors were locked with no sign of an attempted burglary.

At 3:03 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the 700 block of Hancock Street, a caller reported finding a bike in the woods. The caller had reported the discovery to a local bike shop and was told to contact the police.

An officer retrieved the bike and returned it to its owner.

At 8:12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, officers drove to North Beach County Park after a caller complained of people in the park after it was closed.

The officers contacted the beach-goers and warned them that the beach closed at dusk.

At 8:37 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, in the 1600 block of Grant Street, a caller complained of a car driving in the wrong lane, causing the caller to swerve to miss the other vehicle. Officers searched the area and were unable to locate the vehicle, which was described as a green pickup truck.

At 8:37 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, an employee in the 3900 block of Holcomb Street requested a welfare check on an elderly customer who was supposed to pick her vehicle up from the auto service shop but hadn’t shown up.

An officer contacted the woman, who was fine, and she said she’d give the auto business a call.

At 9:44 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, in the 600 block of 55th Street, a caller told police that “Swedes were around” as well as vikings. He wouldn’t provide his address, but an officer spoke with the man on the phone. He said he’d smoked a lot of cannabis recently.
