Port Townsend Food Bank adds Saturday hours

The Port Townsend Food Bank is now open to all from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturdays.

“We’re here to help take a little stress off,” said food bank manager Shirley Moss, who encouraged anyone in need to make use of the program.

Moss emphasized the importance of food security for many locals.

“Oftentimes you don’t even know you’ve been carrying a burden until you set it down,” she said. “People are worried that if they use the food bank, they are taking food out of someone else’s mouth, but they’re not.”

Anyone can use the food bank, and Moss said that she and the team of friendly volunteers are excited to offer the new Saturday hours, enabling people who are in school or at work on Wednesdays to utilize the service.

Donations to the food bank come in many forms, from local gardens and small farms, as well as from Pane d’Amore, Fort Worden Hospitality, Costco, local grocery stores, and more. Fresh produce and bread are available, as well as frozen meats and an array of pantry items such as canned vegetables, dried beans, rice, and tuna.

The food bank also offers a selection of pet food.

Financial donations go toward purchases from Food Lifeline, a nonprofit organization that works with food banks, shelters, and meal programs to provide food to those in need.

The Jefferson County Food Bank Association consists of four food banks; Brinnon, Quilcene, Tri-Area, and Port Townsend.

The Port Townsend Food Bank continues to offer their regular hours of 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays, and a senior-only (65 and up) opportunity 11:30 a.m. to
2 p.m. on Saturdays at
1925 Blaine St.
