The Port Townsend Police Department responded to 207 calls for service between Dec. 4 and 11, 2016, which included 9 911 calls, 1 domestic violence call, 1 fireworks call and 7 calls about vehicle prowls. Officers made 59 traffic stops.

Not all calls generate a written case report and not all case reports had been turned in when The Leader went over the week’s calls with Chief Michael Evans on Monday, Dec. 12. Reports and incidents that had been turned in include:

Beer and cookies were shoplifted from a grocery store on Sims Way on Nov. 28, employees said. The man suspected in the thefts had also been in the store twice in two days before the beer-and-cookie incident. He was seen with “something large” in his coat and taking a small drink on a previous occasion. The suspect was described as in his 40s. He was wearing blue jeans and a hoodie.

Review of surveillance video at a hardware store Dec. 3 showed a man shoplifting items from a discount table outside the store. Employees said it appeared to them to be the same man who had taken a jacket earlier without paying for it. The man took Christmas lights, dog collars and bags of screws. Police contacted the man, and the case was referred to the Jefferson County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office for possible charges.

A woman at a restaurant who called 911 twice Dec. 6 was taken into protective custody after police arrived. Employees of a restaurant on Sims Way indicated the woman had called for no apparent reason. The woman, known to police, had been drinking, officers concluded. Police knew she was violating probation, so they called and asked for a warrant to arrest her on that probation violation. The woman had ordered food and drinks from the restaurant and had no visible means of payment.

Employees of a grocery on Sims Way on Dec. 8 reported an unwanted intoxicated man who they say had stolen $82.33 worth of items from the store, including high-alcohol-content beers. The man was arrested on suspicion of theft.

The daughter of an elderly woman on Dec. 11 reported finding $32,000 worth of fraudulent bank withdrawals from her mother’s bank account. The case is under investigation.

Pry marks were found on the front door of a downtown business Dec. 9. Access was not gained. Police Chief Michael Evans noted that this is one of three incidents in downtown in the past few weeks in which someone has attempted to get into a business during the night. There also was an incident of someone trying to gain entry into a business through a roof. “It’s something to be aware of,” Evans said.

A woman was arrested Dec. 11 for assaulting a former boyfriend who was also her caregiver. There were no further details or a case report as of Dec. 12.

Police took a woman at the Winter Shelter into protective custody because she was being uncooperative and was in need of assistance.

Malicious mischief was reported Dec. 12 in the 1200 block of Sims Way after someone threw a rock through the window of a business. Damage was estimated at $750.
