The Port Townsend Police Department responded to 175 calls for service between Jan. 23 and Jan. 29, 2017. The list includes 6 investigations of 911 calls, 1 death report, 2 incidents of disorderly conduct, 2 reports of domestic violence, 2 DUIs, 3 parking complaints, 3 patrol requests, 10 reports of lost/found property, 8 calls about suspicious activity, 5 traffic collisions, 3 theft reports and 44 traffic stops.

Not all calls generate a written case report. The Port Townsend & Jefferson County Leader went over the call logs with Police Chief Michael Evans on Monday, Jan. 30. Among the reports and incidents available for review were:

A female, 78, reported a case of fraud and theft that occurred between Jan. 23 and Jan. 24. The victim had used her computer to go on a website where an unknown person then took control of her device and demanded $20,000. The woman agreed to pay $1,685 and sent the money via Western Union to Vietnam.

A man, 46, reported at 1:09 p.m., Jan. 23 that a former girlfriend had made multiple threats via social media. An officer later noted that the woman, 47, had recently been taken to jail for a probation violation and failure to appear for treatment, so he went to Port Hadlock to talk to her about the threats. She reportedly admitted that she had been heavily intoxicated when she sent the threats, which constitute felony harassment.

Officers learned the location of a 29-year-old man wanted on a Jefferson County District Court bench warrant for failure to comply on an original charge of second-degree criminal trespass. The suspect was located in a house in the 200 block of Thomas Street at 11:44 a.m., Jan. 25, taken into custody and then to the county jail.

An officer recognized a 24-year-old man in a grocery store at 2:15 a.m., Jan. 25 who matched the description of a shoplifting suspect at a Port Hadlock grocery. The officer observed the man behaving in a suspicious manner and approached him when he was in the store parking lot. The officer asked why there were bulges in the man’s trench coat. After an initial denial, the man revealed that he was carrying about 15 food and drink items valued at $64.80. The man was cited.

A student reported that about half a tank of gasoline had apparently been siphoned from their vehicle between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., Jan. 26 in a high school parking lot. The student reported finding the fuel filler door open and gas cap unscrewed.

An officer on foot patrol at 4:18 p.m., Jan. 26 observed people setting up a campsite at the Wave Viewing Gallery, which is an illegal use of the park. The officer recognized a male subject known to have an arrest warrant from Jefferson County District Court for malicious mischief. The adult male was arrested, and found to be in possession of paraphernalia associated with intravenous drug use. The subject was taken to the county jail.

An officer stopped a motorist for driving 42 mph in a 30-mph zone at 12:20 a.m., Jan. 27 on Sims Way at Cliff Street. The driver, a 66-year-old Port Ludlow man, exhibited signs of being under the influence. He did not do well on field sobriety tests, and the officer got a warrant for a blood draw. The man was taken to jail on suspicion of DUI.

Police were dispatched at 10 a.m., Jan. 28 to West Sims Way on a report of a man yelling racial slurs at passing vehicles while holding a tree limb. The man reportedly confronted a female who was walking by. Officers arrived, and the suspect went into a hiding place. Officers approached, and the man emerged with a hunting knife in hand. Officers recognized the man, 54, who is known to have mental health and substance abuse issues. Officers ordered him to drop the knife, and he complied. The suspect was handcuffed without further incident. He was arrested for disorderly conduct and taken to the hospital for medical clearance.

Officers learned that a 32-year-old male transient had his guitar destroyed in an act of malicious mischief. An officer went to a music store and with the staff’s help, secured a used guitar similar to the one that was destroyed. When the officer, off duty, entered an establishment Jan. 28 looking for the transient man so he could present the guitar, he was confronted verbally by another man, who apparently was intoxicated and who recognized him as an officer. The off-duty officer had to show his badge so other people in the establishment understood the incident. The officer then went to the Winter Shelter and left the guitar for its intended recipient.
