We must all be aware of the importance of having a viable and well trained fire and rescue organization when the need for such services arises. Well trained personnel are a highly valuable resource for our community. Such services have become even more needed recently as the demand for them has increased.

Since 2011 there has been no increase in the East Jefferson Fire Rescue budget. We have been limping along with a 1 percent annual increase, which after factoring in inflation means actually less operating capital. In addition, since 2011 calls have increased by 50% and equipment purchases have been deferred. Passing the two ballot issues will allow EJFR to hire better trained and perhaps experienced personnel and upgrade the required equipment which will provide the necessary safety net for the public involved. Keep in mind that 75 percent of the calls are for emergency medical services with the remainder being fire-related. Remember, these public provided services could save your home or your life.

I believe this levy increase proposed by the EJFR board is responsible and well-planned to insure that the needs of today and the future will be met.

Ballots will be arriving after Jan. 25 for two propositions; please vote yes to ensure our growing area has the needed resources to provide the necessary emergency services.
