This letter is regarding the levy for our East Jefferson Fire Rescue (EJFR).
I believe this levy (composed of two propositions) must be passed for the following reasons:
One: EJFR has not had a rate increase since 2011 and has been limping along with a budget based on a fixed dollar amount that can only be increased by up to 1 percent annually. With inflation, it has less money each year to operate. Critical equipment and vehicle purchases are being deferred, costing us more in the long run. 911 calls have increased by almost 50 percent since 2011.
Two: East Jefferson is a large territory with a growing population and EJFR has a relatively small force of trained professionals who are serving all of us 24/7. They are stretched thin, often receiving multiple calls at the same time. This limits staffing and vehicle resources and impacts their ability to respond quickly and efficiently.
Three: 75 percent of the calls to EJFR are for emergency medical support for our citizens of all ages and walks of life. The remainder of calls are for emergencies such as fires.
Supporting these two propositions could not only save your home, it could save your life.
You should be receiving your ballot by mail after Jan. 25 for both propositions. Please vote YES.
Election Day is Feb. 14.
