PERSPECTIVE: Health care values: Nothing’s changed

Posted

On Jan. 20, Donald Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the United States.

Moments after his inauguration, President Trump signed an executive order setting in motion the repeal of the Affordable Care Act, a law that provides health care coverage to more than 20 million Americans, including nearly 3,000 Jefferson County residents.

The potential repeal of the ACA, also known as Obamacare, is troubling and could dilute many of the improvements we have made to our local health care system.

Jefferson Healthcare vows to advocate for its survival or, at a minimum, the continuation of health care coverage for every member of our community. We have initiated discussions with legislative and congressional leaders in Olympia and Washington, D.C., and will continue to advocate for health care that works for every resident of our community.

Despite our best efforts, the outcome of the law and impact to our health care system remain uncertain. In uncertain times, I find it helpful to focus on what we can control, what we hold most dear and what we know to be true.

Jefferson Healthcare will continue to work on improving access to care. This was, and continues to be, former Jefferson Healthcare Chief Executive Officer Vic Dirksen’s shining legacy and one that the entire organization works hard to uphold.

We will continue to work with partners like Planned Parenthood and the ACLU to improve, expand and protect local access to women’s health care services. We will continue to work with the LGBTQ community to make sure our systems of care are offered in a respectful, dignified manner to every patient we serve and that we are an employer that welcomes and celebrates workplace diversity.

We will continue to expand into services like mental health, substance abuse, transitional housing, and dental care because these services, or lack thereof, frequently impact those with the greatest needs, fewest resources and softest voices.

And we will continue to care for any member of our community in urgent need, regardless of the documents they hold or do not hold. Lastly, Jefferson Healthcare will continue to be here to take care of you. We are a strong organization and will navigate the turbulent waters of change while continuing to meet community need.

This is who we are, because this is who you are.

And while everything may have changed at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., nothing has changed at Jefferson Healthcare. Our values are your values. That you can be certain of.
