Parking enforcement within Port Townsend has resumed after the Port Townsend Police Department backed off during the summer months, due to construction projects downtown.
“We didn’t stop, we just laid off because of the situation with [fewer] parking spaces downtown with construction going on,” said police Sgt. Ed Green.
Police eased up on writing the $15 parking tickets in June or July, when construction was at its peak, Green said. Now that construction is subsiding and “quite a few spaces have become available” in terms of parking, police volunteers have resumed their duties.
Parking tickets are written by trained police volunteers, some of them retired police officers.
To avoid finding a ticket on their windshield, drivers should pay attention to signs, particularly those announcing time limits in specific spaces. Also, when parking next to a curb, make sure tires are inside the white painted line.
